Now that the UK has left the EU many people are wondering if there is going to be any significant changes when it comes to travelling throughout Europe – the simple answer is no.
You will still be able to go on holiday without disruption. However, it is still worth keeping an eye on developments as they happen. Below are a few things to bear in mind if you are travelling to Benidorm after Brexit.
You can still book a holiday
If you are looking to book a holiday to Benidorm or have already booked your trip you do not have anything to worry about. The current Brexit deal between the UK and the EU means that there will be a transition period during which time all the EU rules and regulations will still apply to the UK. There will be future negotiations between the UK and the EU so should you book a holiday in 2021 and beyond your rights will depend on how those negotiations go.
Documets will stay the same
Currently, you don’t need any kind of visa to get into the EU, your current passport will be fine to use and you will be able to travel freely on it until the end of the transition period. If you have an identity card that will also be accepted.
If you are on a short stay in the EU which is up to 90 days in any 180 days, you will be granted visa-free travel if it is for the purposes of tourism. You are not allowed to work or study during that period. This will be the case in the EU so long as the UK offers similar visa-free travel to those people visiting the UK.
Queues will not be longer
No one likes to queue at the airport, so the good news is that there will not be any additional border checks. If you are unsure about whether to use the “EU” or the “non-EU” queue at your destination, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) says you will be able to use “EU/EEA passport gates, until at least 31 December 2020”.
You will not need a new passports
Your current passport is valid for travelling anywhere within the EU until its date of expiry, during the transition. From January 1st, 2021, you will need to have at least six months left on an adult or child passport to travel. So, make sure you check the expiry date before booking any travel.
The EHIC scheme will continue
When it comes to your health while travelling in the EU the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) will continue during the period of transition. The card entitles the holder to state-provided medical treatment in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
