What Do the Colors On the Pride Flag Indicate?

The pride flag symbolizes LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) pride and the social movements centering around the LGBTQ community. Previously, the pride flag had simple horizontal stripes of rainbow colors (red to purple). It was designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978, but later in 2018, Daniel Quasar redesigned the flag with five extra colors- white, pink, baby blue, brown, and black.

This article will discuss the meaning of the colors in pride flag and their significance.

Hot Pink

Gilbert included this color in the pride flag, but later it was removed from the flag for production issues. The hot pink color stays at the top of the pride flag and denotes sexuality. Pink is like a distant cousin of red, and red signifies passion or lust. As a distant cousin of red, pink typically represents romance. However, in the pride flag, pink was included as a color to denote sexuality.

Red

Although, in general, the red color denotes passion, in the pride flag, it was included as a symbol of life. It somehow makes sense as the color of our blood is also red, and blood carries out the most critical functions in the human body. Without proper functionality of blood, humans cannot survive.

Orange

As a color, orange symbolizes joy, warmth, optimism, and sometimes, danger. However, in the pride flag, orange stands for healing. Optimism is closely related to healing/recovery, one of the most critical aspects of human existence. So, indeed it is an undeniable color in the pride flag.

Yellow

The yellow color symbolizes happiness, fun and warmth, and sunshine. The yellow color in the pride flag is the symbol of sunshine or simply the Sun. It is a must for the pride flag since sunlight is a source of energy for almost every living being on Earth and also re-energizes all of Earth’s activities and happiness after a night of darkness.

Green

Green is the color of life, renewal, fertility, and freshness. Green is the most prevalent color in nature, and green trees symbolize fertility and immortality. In the pride flag, green stands for nature. We call it Mother Nature because all the biological activities necessary to sustain the life of humans start from nature.

Turquoise

Although it is said that turquoise is the color of peace and protection, in the pride flag, this color denotes art. For several issues, turquoise was removed from the pride flag in later years.

Indigo

Indigo originally is used to denote integrity and intuition. However, in the pride flag, indigo stands for harmony. Without harmony, peaceful and stable society, which is a dream of many gay hotels in Delhi such as the LaLiT New Delhi can never be achieved.

Violet

In general, violet is the color of modesty. In the pride flag, violet denotes the soul or spirit. The color indicates calmness or peace, but in a larger view, violet connects every person on earth through spiritual means.

Among the newly added colors, brown and black denote POC or people of color, and pink, baby blue, and white stand for trans people.
